On June 24, 2026, two earthquakes of magnitudes 7.2 and 7.5 struck Venezuela within minutes, causing catastrophic damage. The epicenter was about 90 miles west of the capital Caracas. The most affected areas were Caracas and the coastal state of Guaira. The quakes were followed by more than 1,400 aftershocks.

At one month after the disaster, more than 5,300 people are confirmed dead and more than 16,500 were injured. Tens of thousands remain missing. The World Bank has estimated that the twin quakes caused $19.6 billion in damages. Nearly 20,000 people are now displaced from homes that were destroyed.

In response to the Venezuela earthquakes, the King County Executive authorized a 14-day employee giving response from July 29 to Aug. 12. Two nonprofits selected as the beneficiaries of this emergency response are:

Employees can make a one-time payroll donation by Aug. 12. Employees may also choose to donate to these designated nonprofits through the storefront. The storefront option provides a broader list of EGP nonprofits that are responding to the Venezuela earthquakes.
