Week 1 Nonprofit Expos:  Liftoff!

Friday, October 7th marked the close of the first week of the King County Employee Giving Program’s 2016 Annual Giving Drive. Only 6 more weeks to go!

The first two Nonprofit Expos, at King Street Center and King County Courthouse, saw amazing turnouts of over 300 employees interested in enriching our community by learning more about the organizations they can donate to. That’s a solid launch!

But folks, these Expos are about more than just giving!  They are an opportunity for us to collectively ENGAGE with the people that are making our world a better place: hear their stories, ask the hard questions and understand the issues and people their services help.

We have 6 more weeks to help our colleagues see the benefits by sharing the information we collect from these Expos; otherwise, the message stops with our donation.

Trust me,  I’m guilty of doing this too:  I learn a couple of key things about the mission of an organization I align with and take the knowledge home with me knowing that I’ll be donating to them and pat myself on the back. “Ahhhhh yes. I’ve done MY part (pat, pat, pat). Nicely done, me! ” And the memory fades…

But that’s not where my donation stops.  It’s the halfway point.

What I’m asking you to do is take it one step further and SHARE what you’ve just learned with your workplace, officemates, supervisors, admins and directors. This is advocacy 101 because, if when you share what that organization is doing, you make your support much, much bigger than just your contribution.

When you’ve perused the Nonprofits and have collected their info from the Expo, follow up with your colleagues about the organizations you met and, how they can make their donation count—just like you did. This is the other half of your donation.

In effect, the comprehensive piece of this program is built largely on our ability to act as ambassadors and spread the word about not only the Expos and the ease contributing, but the organizations we care about and–more importantly–the people they are helping.

Don’t miss out on the upcoming Expos! It’s your chance to connect with the organizations doing great work with your contributions for a ton of different causes and build support for them in your workplace:
